omidbasir- 1. FC Köln, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, is facing significant challenges in their defense as they have now lost central defensive mainstay Joël Schmied due to a muscle tear, confirmed by an MRI on Sunday. This injury will keep Schmied sidelined for several weeks. He has been a crucial part of the team, participating in all 11 league matches so far and starting in nine of those.

Schmied’s injury marks the fourth setback for the club’s center-back lineup this season. Former captain Tim Hübers is already out for the long term, and fellow defender Luca Kilian may not play at all during the current campaign. Additionally, summer signing Rav van den Berg has been unable to contribute due to a shoulder injury, having not appeared since matchday three.

On a positive note, Köln’s head coach, Lukas Kwasniok, may soon be able to call upon Van den Berg more frequently, as the former Middlesbrough player recently represented the Dutch U21 team and is back to training consistently with his club.

In the meantime, former Germany U21 captain Eric Martel, who typically plays as a defensive midfielder, has been effectively stepping in to bolster the defense. Veteran Dominique Heintz and another recent acquisition, Cenk Özkacar, on loan from Valencia, are also available to provide support as Köln navigates these challenging circumstances.
