In his inaugural season under coach Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo has had to take on a limited role with Manchester United. However, Amorim has publicly expressed confidence in the young England international, suggesting that more opportunities will arise for Mainoo to become a pivotal player for the club.

Timing has played a crucial role in Mainoo’s situation, as Amorim noted that Mainoo may have received more playing time following a recent injury to captain Bruno Fernandes, had he not faced an injury of his own around the same period.

Mainoo made an impressive debut at the age of 18 during the 2023-24 season, quickly gaining attention for his composure on the field. He notably scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City and earned a place on the England national team for Euro 2024, where he started in the final against Spain. However, since then, his trajectory has hit some hurdles, raising questions about his future at the club.

Speculation around a potential January transfer has emerged, with discussions of both loan and permanent moves to rival Premier League clubs or European giants. Despite this, an exit appears unlikely as Amorim wishes to retain him at Old Trafford.

In a press conference ahead of United’s Boxing Day match against Newcastle, Amorim stated, “Kobbie Mainoo will have the opportunity; he has all the time. He can play in various positions, such as the role of Casemiro or even in the position we utilized for Mason Mount in our last game. He is going to be the future of Manchester United, in my opinion; he just needs to wait for his chance, and everything can change in football in two days.”

Amorim has not frequently called upon Mainoo this season, as he has largely been in the shadows of established players like Fernandes and Casemiro. Nevertheless, Amorim’s faith in Mainoo remains firm, and he has expressed reluctance to let him leave.

He remarked, “If we are not bringing someone in, it’s challenging to allow Mainoo to depart. We currently lack depth. Even with a full squad, our resources are limited, which can complicate matters. We have significant responsibilities as a club, and we need to win every game without excuses. It will be difficult for Mainoo to leave if we cannot secure a replacement.”

A few days prior to Mainoo’s injury, discussions had surfaced regarding his need for more playing time. Unfortunately, just as opportunities were presenting themselves, he was sidelined due to injury, which Amorim described as a stroke of bad luck.

As the January transfer window approaches, Amorim reflected on the potential for new signings amid ongoing injury challenges and the absence of players like Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui, who are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations. This has left United in a precarious position. Consequently, Amorim has not ruled out the possibility of bringing in reinforcements.

He added, “We are facing difficulties at the moment, but the club has a plan that we intend to follow. If we can acquire a player we believe will be a significant asset for the club’s future, we will proceed. When assessing our team, I need to extract greater quality from the group. If we can find someone who enhances our squad, we will pursue it; otherwise, we will allocate funds during the summer window.”
