Cristiano Ronaldo has explained why he did not attend the funeral of Portugal teammate Diogo Jota. Jota, who played for Liverpool and the Portugal national team, died in a car accident in July along with his brother André Silva. Several teammates were in attendance, but Ronaldo’s absence drew public attention.

In an interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo said he stayed away to avoid turning the funeral into what he described as a “circus.”
He explained:

“Two things. People criticize me, but I don’t care. When your conscience is clear, you don’t worry about opinions. Also, since my father passed away, I do not visit cemeteries.”

Ronaldo added that his presence often draws unwanted attention.

“Knowing how the media works, I did not want the focus to be on me. It was a moment for the family, not football talk or interviews. Life can easily turn into a circus, and I did not want to contribute to that. I stand by my decision.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, manager Arne Slot, Andy Robertson, and former players Jordan Henderson and James Milner were among those who attended. Portugal internationals, including Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, were also present.

Diogo Jota made 49 appearances for Portugal and was part of their Nations League success. At Liverpool, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, earning respect as a key figure in both club and national squads.
