Sevilla FC resumes training this Sunday after enjoying a brief hiatus during this festive season, marking the beginning of preparations for their return to competitive play. Three players have chosen to return a day early to expedite their recovery and readiness for match action, although the situation regarding Marcao is distinct.

Nianzou and Rubén Vargas concluded the previous competitive year sidelined due to injuries but have since participated in training this morning at the club’s sports facilities. The Swiss player, Vargas, may emerge as a notable figure in Sevilla’s upcoming winter transfer market. Their first La Liga match of 2026 is scheduled to take place at the Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium against Levante on Sunday, January 4th, at 14:00 hours.

Marcao has also been present during training sessions. The central defender was sent off in the last match of the year at the Santiago Bernabéu and will consequently miss the start of 2026 due to suspension. He has received a six-match ban: one match for receiving a double yellow card, four matches for “insults, verbal offenses, and abusive behavior towards the main referee,” and an additional match for “conduct detrimental to the sporting order.” The club plans to appeal this decision, and if the appeal is unsuccessful, Marcao will have to wait until mid-February to make his return.

This situation presents a challenge for Matías Almeyda, who, in his initial months at the helm, has shown confidence in Marcao. The Argentine coach will need to reconfigure his defense once again. Due to various injuries and suspensions, the backline has lacked consistency, and this could provide an opportunity for Kike Salas, a promising youth player, to impress the manager.
