Following an impressive five-game unbeaten streak in the league, including successive victories over Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool aimed to leapfrog Chelsea and secure a position in the top four by claiming all three points on home ground.

Despite facing a Wolves team struggling to break a 17-game winless streak, Liverpool found it difficult to penetrate their resolute defense, with the match seeming poised to remain scoreless as the first half approached its conclusion.

However, just before halftime, Liverpool managed to shatter Wolves’ defense as Ryan Gravenberch seized Jeremie Frimpong’s cutback and fired it past goalkeeper Jose Sa, marking his first goal since the derby victory over Everton in September.

The champions doubled their lead just a minute later when Hugo Ekitike embarked on a remarkable solo run, setting up Florian Wirtz, who calmly slotted the ball into the net in a moment that brought relief and joy to all associated with Liverpool.

Having struggled to make an impact since his big-money transfer from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, Wirtz appears to have turned a corner for Liverpool. Prior to his goal against Wolves, the 22-year-old recorded his first league assist during a tense 2-1 victory against Tottenham on December 20, providing a pass to Alexander Isak, who unfortunately sustained a leg fracture shortly after scoring.

Liverpool head coach Slot echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence that Wirtz would continue to find the back of the net in the upcoming challenging fixtures against Leeds United, Fulham, and league leaders Arsenal in early January. After the match against Wolves, Slot remarked to Sky Sports, “The team has recognized how much he has contributed, creating chances and coming close to scoring. He will undoubtedly score many more goals for us. Florian did more than just score today.”

Wirtz, sharing his joy of finally scoring for Liverpool, expressed, “It was a wonderful feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and still am. I remained confident that I would score eventually. I wanted to contribute earlier with goals and assists, but I accept the situation. I know it will happen, and I will keep pushing forward. We played brilliantly in the first half, regained control of the game after losing it, and the entire team worked hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit challenging, and I cannot explain why, but we need to improve. We aim to be atop the league, and although our start has been tough, we are improving and accumulating points.”

Before kickoff, a poignant tribute took place as Diogo Jota’s sons, Dinis and Duarte, joined the matchday mascots. This was the first encounter between Liverpool and Wolves since the tragic passing of the late striker in a car accident in Spain last July.

During his time with Wolves, the Portugal international scored 44 goals across 131 appearances before transferring to Liverpool in September 2020, where he has since achieved three major honors.

In the post-match press conference, Slot commented on the emotional tribute to Jota, stating, “It was difficult yet special. The football community has once again demonstrated its solidarity in moments like these. Our fans have been remarkable since the tragedy, and their support today, alongside the away fans, showcased the unity among football supporters. In the 18th minute, Wolves fans sang in memory of Diogo, and our fans applauded. In the 20th minute, the gesture was reciprocated.

“The extraordinary nature of English football is not solely attributed to the players but significantly to the fans. Today, we have illustrated this to the world.”
