In a bid to apply maximum pressure on Arsenal ahead of their match against Brighton, Manchester City faced Nottingham Forest, seeking to capitalize on the advantage of playing first on Saturday afternoon.

The initial 45 minutes proved to be tightly contested, with no goals scored. However, City broke the deadlock when midfielder Tijjani Reijnders received a clever pass from Rayan Cherki and dispatched the ball past Forest goalkeeper John Victor.

Just six minutes later, City’s lead was short-lived as winger Omari Hutchinson, a summer acquisition from Ipswich Town, scored his debut goal for Forest.

With City dominating possession and pressing for a crucial winner, they reclaimed the lead with just seven minutes remaining in regulation time. Cherki struck the ball through Morgan Gibbs-White’s legs and into the net, securing City’s victory.

With this win, City achieved their eighth consecutive victory across all competitions, momentarily overtaking Arsenal at the top of the league. Attention then turned to the Emirates Stadium to observe how Arsenal would respond.

Arsenal rose to the occasion, taking an early lead when captain Martin Odegaard collected a pass from Bukayo Saka and fired the ball past Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen just 14 minutes into the match.

Despite this bright start, the hosts struggled to maintain momentum, failing to showcase their best form, reminiscent of their recent victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton, and Crystal Palace.

It wasn’t until the 52nd minute that Arsenal extended their lead, aided by an own goal from Brighton’s Georginio Rutter, whose misjudged clearance found its way into his own net.

Reflecting on previous encounters, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta recalled his frustration following a 1-1 draw against Brighton in the same fixture last season. Brighton threatened to dampen Arsenal’s spirits when midfielder Diego Gomez scored in the 64th minute, narrowing the deficit.

Nevertheless, Arsenal managed to secure a vital win, allowing them to surpass City once again in the league standings as they prepare for a critical home match against Aston Villa next Tuesday. The Villans recently celebrated their 11th consecutive win after defeating Chelsea 2-1.

Arteta, addressing his team’s readiness to challenge City for the league title, emphasized, “We can only control what we do, and we are doing a lot of good things, though we still have room for improvement to achieve better margins.”

He acknowledged the need for more players to return from injury to provide fresh options, highlighting the challenges of playing every three days and expressing confidence in their preparedness.

Regarding the tense atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium after Brighton’s goal, Arteta remarked, “That’s a willingness to win! We all want to win so badly. We must continue to play with composure and seize opportunities; we missed chances to extend our lead.”

On the opposite end, City’s manager Pep Guardiola praised the significance of the three points gained against a Nottingham Forest team that had won three of their previous six league matches.

“Winter time, Nottingham Forest away… I know the memory may fade, but we often face tough games like this during our Premier League campaigns,” Guardiola noted. “These three points are substantial, particularly given the quality of our opponents. Sean Dyche has built a formidable team, one that recently contended for the Champions League.”

Guardiola stressed the importance of possessing an exceptional mentality, saying, “It’s crucial to suffer and defend well, understanding that the game can be competitive; otherwise, victory is unattainable. Last season, we lost a similar match, and since then, the team has been eager to rectify that. Ending this first leg of the season with such an important three points is encouraging.”
