Columbus Crew Considers Martin for Head Coach PositionColumbus Crew Considers Martin for Head Coach Position

Martin has been shortlisted as a final candidate for the vacant head coach position at Columbus Crew, as reported by The Athletic.

The club is in search of a new manager following the departure of Nancy, whose successful tenure has left a significant legacy. Despite Martin’s mixed recent managerial record, he is being considered as a suitable fit for Major League Soccer (MLS). If appointed, this would mark Martin’s inaugural coaching role in North America.

Martin began his managerial career in the English Football League and progressed through various clubs, including Milton Keynes Dons, Swansea City, and Southampton. At Southampton, he notably guided the team to promotion to the Premier League, although his tenure ended with his dismissal during that season. In June 2025, he took over as manager at Rangers but was relieved of his duties in October after a challenging period of 17 matches.

Columbus Crew’s interest in Martin arises as the club seeks to redefine its tactical identity and competitive goals. Following Nancy’s impressive three-year leadership, which saw the Crew become one of the dominant teams in MLS—culminating in a 2023 MLS Cup championship and a 2024 Leagues Cup title—the club is eager to build on that success. Nancy’s subsequent move to Celtic came after the Crew concluded the 2025 season in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, with Celtic reportedly paying an undisclosed fee to secure his services.

As the MLS offseason progresses, Columbus Crew is anticipated to act promptly in appointing their next head coach in preparation for the 2026 preseason. Should Martin be chosen, he will aim to enhance team cohesion and steer the Crew toward playoff contention. Additionally, the club faces the challenge of replacing influential midfielder Darlington Nagbe, a standout player in MLS history.
