Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended his rotation strategy following criticism from former England captain Wayne Rooney. Rooney suggested that senior players should question Maresca’s team selections, particularly after he implemented seven changes for the recent 2-2 draw against Qarabag in the Champions League.

This match marked the fifth consecutive occasion where Maresca altered at least seven players in his starting lineup. In response, he highlighted the strength of his squad, asserting that such rotations are crucial for maintaining player fitness during what he described as a “marathon” season, which commenced with Chelsea’s triumph in the Club World Cup over the summer.

“We are in an era where anyone can express their opinions,” Maresca commented on Rooney’s critique. “Since joining the club, I have believed in rotating players. No one raises concerns when we win; it’s understandable that there is dissent when we don’t.”

Maresca further explained, “I personally enjoyed rotation as a player. The physicality and intensity of today’s football differ significantly from years past, making it unfeasible for the same players to participate in 65 matches in a single season. To view the season as a marathon means that we must adopt a strategic mindset, especially as we approach the final phases in February and March.”

He also stood by his decision to field teenage defender Jorrel Hato in Baku, despite the player being involved in both goals conceded against Qarabag. “When the rotation consists of talents like Andrey Santos, a Brazil international, and Jorrel Hato, a Netherlands international, among others, it transcends mere rotation. It’s essential to allow young, talented players the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. However, when results do not favor us, rotation becomes a focal point of criticism.”
