Pep Guardiola is set to mark a significant milestone in his managerial career as he approaches his 1,000th match, leading Manchester City against Liverpool in the Premier League this Sunday. Over his eight seasons at City, Guardiola has secured six Premier League titles, contributing to a total of 715 victories across all competitions since he began his coaching journey with Barcelona B in 2007. His illustrious career spans 12 top-flight titles across Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, alongside three Champions League trophies, with only 128 losses to his name and an additional 14 cup victories.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Guardiola described his accomplishments as “insane,” stating that while he is aware of the impressive statistics, he does not dwell on them. “The numbers are staggering, and it’s difficult to replicate such success if I were to start again,” he noted. Guardiola has transformed English football with his innovative style of play, which has inspired a generation of managers.

His tenure at Manchester City has been historic; he led the club to become the first to achieve 100 points in a single season, the first to complete a domestic treble, and the first to win four consecutive league titles. “With over 70% of victories, we typically win seven out of every ten games, which is achievable thanks to the quality of players I’ve worked with at Barcelona, Munich, and City, coupled with relentless hard work and dedication,” he explained.

When asked about being labeled the greatest manager of all time by some, Guardiola responded humorously, “They are completely right!” He acknowledged the historical impact of managers and his own success, emphasizing that he never aspired to be the best.

Guardiola has been honored with induction into the League Managers Association’s Hall of Fame, with Sir Alex Ferguson remarking on the significance of achieving such longevity in management. Facing Liverpool this Sunday, Guardiola recognizes the fierce rivalry that has developed, stating, “We have pushed each other to improve. If I had to choose one rival for this milestone, it would be Liverpool, as our rivalry has defined the Premier League in recent years.”

Despite Liverpool being one of the teams he has lost to most frequently, Guardiola has great respect for them and for Jurgen Klopp, whom he regards as his most formidable opponent, facing him 31 times and being bested on 11 occasions. “Liverpool, particularly under Klopp, have been our biggest rivals, and I truly value the healthy competition we share. It’s been an enriching experience that has inspired me to elevate my coaching approach,” he concluded.
