Bournemouth and City have reportedly engaged in productive discussions concerning the structuring of Semenyo’s £65 million transfer fee. Sources indicate that all parties are comfortable with the framework of the deal, which is anticipated to progress quickly once the transfer window opens on January 1. There is a pressing timeline, as the clause must be activated before January 10, adding urgency to the negotiations. However, Iraola’s focus remains on maximizing the value of his star player while he continues to don the black and red jersey.

Bournemouth’s decision to retain Semenyo comes at a time when they face a challenging schedule. After Arsenal’s visit to the Vitality Stadium on January 4, Tottenham will follow shortly, leaving little room for sentimentality as results become increasingly critical. The Cherries’ early-season momentum has significantly waned, with ten league matches passing without a win, a streak that dates back to their victory over Nottingham Forest in October. This poor run has seen them slip to 15th in the table, just five points above the relegation zone and precariously close to West Ham United in 18th place. Semenyo played the full 90 minutes in Bournemouth’s resilient 2-2 draw away at Chelsea on Tuesday night, and his manager was quick to reaffirm that the Ghana international remains central to his plans.

“I don’t know what is going to happen, but he will definitely play against Arsenal. This is not his last game,” Iraola stated post-match. “He needs to recover because we play Arsenal at home in three days. Against the league leaders, he will be an important player for us.”

The rapid shift in Semenyo’s prospects is notable. Just six months ago, he seemed firmly integrated into Bournemouth’s long-term ambitions, having signed a new five-year contract in July and expressed his satisfaction with his growth at the club. He remarked, “I’ve grown so much at the club, both on and off the pitch, and I’m really happy to have signed ahead of returning for pre-season. From the fans to the staff and my teammates, I can’t speak highly enough of the people around the club. It’s a great place to be.”

Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth’s president of football operations, echoed these sentiments, categorizing Semenyo as “crucial” to the club’s advancement and a “key member” of their ongoing project. Few anticipated that within half a season, Europe’s elite clubs would be showing such keen interest.

Despite the growing likelihood of Semenyo’s departure, Iraola has consistently expressed his desire to retain the winger for as long as possible. Earlier in December, he candidly acknowledged the challenges of managing a club where standout players are always at risk of being lured away by more lucrative offers.

“Obviously, I don’t want to lose him. This is quite clear, but there are some situations that are not under my control,” he remarked.

If Bournemouth manages to stay afloat this season, Semenyo will undoubtedly deserve much of the credit. Even as team results have faltered, his individual performance remains consistent, with nine league goals and three assists showcasing his reliability, alongside three goals in his last four matches underscoring his importance to the squad.
