Zirkzee found the net in a disappointing draw against Wolves but was substituted at half-time after contributing to the visitors’ equalizer. The Dutch striker has underperformed since his £34 million ($45 million) transfer from Bologna in the summer of 2024 and has attracted interest from Roma, although the Serie A club is reportedly considering only a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer.

Currently sidelined due to injury, Mainoo has yet to start a single Premier League match this season and has requested another loan move after previously seeking one in August. However, with Manchester United missing eight players due to injuries and the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, coach Amorim is hesitant to further weaken his already thin squad. He has also indicated that there will be no new signings in the upcoming month.

In a press conference prior to the match against Leeds on Sunday, Amorim stated, “The transfer window is not going to change; we have no discussions about altering the squad. We have a strategy in place, and while we are close to Champions League positions, we also need to keep an eye on the eight teams behind us. Our focus is on the next game.”

When asked if any players had expressed a desire to leave, Amorim responded clearly, “No, none of them have. I don’t expect players to come to me requesting a transfer.”

Despite the recent slip-ups by teams like Liverpool and Chelsea, the Red Devils have struggled to break into the top five. As the season reaches its halfway point, they sit level on 30 points with fifth-placed Chelsea and three points behind Liverpool. Amorim acknowledged that his team should be performing better.

He commented, “I believe we are playing well, but when we have our full squad, we clearly attack more effectively. We are falling short in crucial moments, and we should be earning more points. We always strive for improvement.”

As United prepare to visit historic rivals Leeds, this will mark Amorim’s first experience at Elland Road. The intense rivalry between the clubs has been somewhat muted in recent years due to Leeds’ absence from the top flight. The coach anticipates a challenging atmosphere but emphasized that his players, including newcomers like Bendito Mantato, Shea Lacey, and Jack Fletcher, must rise to the occasion.

“I understand that this is a significant derby with a passionate environment and a fierce rivalry,” said Amorim. “However, every Premier League match is tough. Each game is crucial, and while it means a lot to the fans, our goal is to win. They possess considerable pace, which has caused us difficulties in the past. We have proven that we can win in various contexts, and we aim to do so again.

“This experience will be different for me; I have not encountered this type of atmosphere before. The noise will be substantial. It’s challenging to compare different cultures and histories, but when you play for Manchester United, you must be prepared for anything. The Premier League is the most competitive league, and unpredictability is part of the game.

“We assess all factors, but the young players must be ready. Given our current squad limitations, I will do my best to field a team capable of handling the situation and adapting during the match. They need to be prepared for a challenging environment, but readiness is essential.”
