MANCHESTER — Ruben Amorim has conveyed a lack of optimism regarding potential signings in the January transfer window, revealing that there are currently “no conversations” about enhancing his squad this month.

This statement marks a shift from his earlier stance, where he had suggested a more open possibility by saying, “we will see” when queried about potential arrivals in January.

Manchester United had shown interest in winger Antoine Semenyo, but he ultimately chose to engage with Manchester City instead.

Amorim noted on Boxing Day that his recruitment vision sometimes differs from that of director of football Jason Wilcox and the board, highlighting the necessity for “common ground” to be reached before any new players can join the team.

As it stands, the Portuguese manager may have to navigate through January without reinforcements, despite the absence of eight senior players due to injuries and international duties.

“The transfer window is not going to change,” Amorim stated during a news conference on Friday.

“We have no conversations at this moment for any changes in the squad. There’s a process, an idea that will continue. While we are positioned near the Champions League spots, we are also closely trailing about eight teams behind us. Thus, our focus is solely on the next game.”

Amorim’s team is set to face Leeds this Sunday, aiming to recover from a disappointing 1-1 draw against bottom-placed Wolves. Leeds are currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak, distancing themselves from the relegation zone by seven points.

United will be without several first-team players, including Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire, while Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Amorim does not anticipate the return of any players for the match at Elland Road, where United has maintained an unbeaten record in league play since 2002.

“No different issues, we will reassess after one more training session tomorrow [Saturday],” Amorim remarked.

“I don’t believe anyone will recover, but we will see. I’ve heard that it’s a significant derby with a great atmosphere and deep-rooted rivalry. However, every match in the Premier League presents tough challenges for us. It’s just another game; although I understand its importance to the fans, we need to go there and strive for victory.”
