Erik ten Hag has been appointed as the technical director of FC Twente, a prominent club in the Dutch Eredivisie, as confirmed by the organization.

The former manager of Ajax, Manchester United, and Bayer Leverkusen will make a return to the Netherlands, officially joining FC Twente on February 1. He will succeed Jan Streuer, who is set to retire at the end of the current season. Ten Hag has signed a contract that extends through the summer of 2028.

Ten Hag’s tenure at Leverkusen was brief, as he was dismissed after only three matches in September 2025, following his appointment in May. Prior to his time in Germany, he enjoyed a two-year period at Manchester United, where he secured both the FA Cup and League Cup but was ultimately released in 2024 due to a series of disappointing results.

In a statement regarding his return, Ten Hag expressed his enthusiasm: “I think it’s wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I have been a supporter at Het Diekman since my youth. My football and coaching careers began here. With my experience in youth development, team building, and elite sports culture, I aim to enhance FC Twente’s technical foundation in collaboration with the Supervisory Board, management, and staff, ensuring the club can sustainably realize its potential as a regional flagship.”

Dominique Scholten, the general manager of FC Twente, highlighted Ten Hag’s strong connection with the club as a significant factor in his selection. “Erik has an incredible track record in football, and his bond with FC Twente has always remained very strong,” Scholten remarked.

“Throughout his career at FC Twente, he has held various roles including youth coach, head of academy, assistant coach, and has since progressed to head coach and technical manager at esteemed clubs, both domestically and internationally. Our ongoing discussions over the past few months have revealed his strong ambition to further develop FC Twente.”
