Liverpool s Performance Under Scrutiny Ahead of Arsenal ClashLiverpool s Performance Under Scrutiny Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Liverpool remains unbeaten in their last nine matches this season.

Manager Arne Slot expressed his difficulties in hearing fans label his team as dull and boring, admitting that while he does not entirely disagree, his goal is to play “attractive football.”

Despite their unbeaten streak, Liverpool has faced criticism in recent weeks for lackluster performances, including draws against Leeds and Fulham following a 2-1 victory over Wolves at Anfield. They are set to visit league leaders Arsenal on Thursday at 20:00 GMT, sitting 14 points behind the Gunners in fourth place.

Top scorer Hugo Ekitike is a significant doubt due to a hamstring injury, with a decision regarding his participation expected after training.

In response to the criticism of his team’s style, Slot stated, “I find it really hard to hear those words, but it’s not that I completely disagree. I would use different words, taking certain factors into account. I aim to win as many trophies as possible, yet I am also recognized for my teams’ commitment to attacking football, which we are striving to achieve.”

He continued, “We are struggling to create numerous chances. However, it’s important to note that we are not the only team facing this challenge. The number of chances we create is not significantly different from other teams performing well in the league.”

According to Opta statistics, Liverpool has created 53 big chances this season—situations where a player should reasonably be expected to score—but has only converted 32 into goals, ranking them seventh in the Premier League alongside Newcastle. In comparison, Manchester City and Arsenal lead with 65 and 62 chances created, respectively.

“I don’t like to hear this criticism, of course,” added Slot.

“Ideally, we would win many games while also playing an attractive style of football, which we have showcased at times this season. We need to find solutions against teams that adopt less attractive strategies, which can be a smart approach for them. We are continuously working to improve and uncover effective strategies.”
