Casemiro s Resurgence and Manchester United s Midfield PursuitsCasemiro s Resurgence and Manchester United s Midfield Pursuits

Casemiro’s recent performances have showcased his vintage prowess. He not only scored and assisted during Manchester United’s 4–2 victory over Brighton but also delivered a commanding performance in the club’s first win at Anfield in nearly a decade. His decisive goal against Chelsea in September further underscores that his competitive spirit remains unyielding.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge the reality behind this resurgence: Casemiro is 33 years old, and with his extensive playing history, concerns about his long-term freshness are valid. Manager Amorim has been judicious in managing Casemiro’s minutes, and he believes that despite the veteran’s current form, an additional marquee signing is essential for the team’s midfield.

Manchester United has been monitoring Carlos Baleba for months, but Brighton, known for their strategic market approach, has firmly set Baleba’s valuation at £115 million ($153 million)—the same fee Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo. The United hierarchy hesitated at this price point, resulting in a postponed pursuit. With Amorim’s midfield plans already in progress for the upcoming summer and Casemiro maintaining his role, calls to revive interest in Baleba are intensifying, notably from former United striker Louis Saha.

In a recent interview with OLBG, Saha remarked, “Fabinho was instrumental for Liverpool, and Rodri has been pivotal for Man City. A strong midfielder provides stability and transition power—qualities that define a top player. There are few who can command midfield as effectively as they do. We were close to acquiring Carlos Baleba from Brighton, and I am genuinely impressed by his style.”

Saha highlighted a pressing need for a midfielder who can inject power and alter the game’s tempo, suggesting that Manchester United sometimes plays too conservatively, which hampers their strikers’ effectiveness.

While praising Casemiro’s current form, Saha emphasized that his contributions extend beyond scoring; they include providing stability and resilience—qualities critical under pressure. “Casemiro has performed exceptionally well, managing expectations and instilling belief within the team,” Saha added.

Baleba’s explosive energy and tactical acumen have drawn comparisons to players like Rodri and former United star Michael Carrick. Saha believes that Baleba’s physical and mental attributes would make him an ideal fit for Amorim’s system. “I long for a player like Michael Carrick, but Baleba offers the power and stamina needed to support a higher pressing approach. His addition would allow Bruno Fernandes to reposition more effectively.”

Saha further explained that Amorim’s pressing system necessitates a midfielder with relentless stamina capable of advancing the defensive line while quickly recovering. “We need a player who can sustain pressure and transition swiftly, and Baleba fits that profile,” he stated.

Despite Manchester United’s renewed interest, Brighton has firmly stated that Baleba will not be available in January, as they consider him vital to their long-term strategy. This situation compels United to either wait until summer to make a formal bid or explore alternative options. Among these alternatives are Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, highly regarded for his versatility by Amorim, and Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace. Additionally, Angelo Stiller of Stuttgart presents a more attainable prospect with a £35 million release clause, and Conor Gallagher from Chelsea appears to be a realistic option for a loan arrangement until the season concludes.
