Manchester City is in the final stages of negotiating a transfer to acquire United States midfielder Sam Coffey from Portland Thorns. The club is expected to pay a fee estimated at approximately $800,000 (£600,000) for Coffey, whose contract with the Thorns extends until the conclusion of the 2027 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.

The 27-year-old has been a target for City over the past few months, with an initial approach made during the summer. Reports indicate that terms have now been finalized, and Coffey, who is widely acknowledged as one of the premier defensive midfielders globally, has received permission to travel to England to complete her transfer to the Women’s Super League leaders.

Coffey has represented the USA national team in 42 matches and has made significant contributions to Portland Thorns over her four-year tenure with the club.

Additionally, Ben Haines, Ellen White, and Jen Beattie are returning for another season of the Women’s Football Weekly podcast. New episodes are available every Tuesday on BBC Sounds, featuring interviews and additional content related to the Women’s Super League and beyond.
