Quinten Timber and Sem Steijn Reflect on Captaincy Changes at FeyenoordQuinten Timber and Sem Steijn Reflect on Captaincy Changes at Feyenoord

Quinten Timber is currently under a contract with Feyenoord that is nearing its expiration, which is part of the reason he had to relinquish the captain’s armband last summer. Surprisingly, manager Robin van Persie appointed summer acquisition Sem Steijn as the new captain, but he too has since lost the armband. Timber has expressed his displeasure with van Persie’s decision.

In an interview with De Telegraaf, Timber stated that van Persie’s choice to strip him of the captaincy was disheartening. “Naturally, it affects you both as a person and as a footballer when you are no longer the captain. It is a tremendous honor to wear that armband. However, I quickly set it aside to fully focus on my football. For me, that matter is now closed.”

While Timber faced this setback at the beginning of the season, it appears that Steijn is also unhappy with van Persie’s decision. Recently, the manager decided to appoint Timon Wellenreuther as the new captain, which did not elicit an enthusiastic response from Steijn. “Sem was indeed disappointed, but it was my decision,” van Persie emphasized, as reported by Voetbal International.

“Sem has reflected on this and chosen to focus on himself, his recovery, and his own performance. That is his right, but otherwise we would have had four captains: Timon, Sem, Anis, and Givairo. Due to Sem’s choice, we now only have three,” van Persie explained.
