In a revealing interview on TNT Sports, Harry Maguire shared insights about a lesser-known aspect of his life—his name. Surprisingly, Maguire wasn’t born with the name Harry.

“My mother initially named me Jacob Harry [Maguire]. After three months, I was often called Jakey, which she didn’t prefer, so she decided to reverse it to Harry Jacob [Maguire]. However, she couldn’t officially change it on my passport until I turned 18. Once I reached that age, I made it official, and my name became Harry Jacob,” he explained.

Interestingly, Maguire’s legal name change coincided almost seamlessly with the onset of his professional football career. Just over a month after his 18th birthday, Harry Jacob Maguire made his senior debut for Sheffield United in the Championship against Cardiff City in 2011. From that moment onward, he has been recognized simply as “Harry” in the football realm, with very few outside his immediate family aware that Jacob was once on his birth certificate.

The revelation about Maguire’s name has prompted comparisons with other footballers who have undergone similar identity changes for personal reasons. For instance, Jordan Pickford—England’s No. 1 goalkeeper—was originally born Pigford before his father modified the family name to avoid playground teasing. Additionally, Joe Hart, another England goalkeeper, was born Charles Joseph John Hart but chose to shorten his name to “Joe” early in his career.

Moreover, Dele Alli famously dropped his surname in 2016, stating, “I wanted a name on my shirt that represented who I am. I have no connection to the Alli surname.” Even Ryan Giggs, regarded as one of Manchester United’s greatest players, was born Ryan Wilson before adopting his mother’s maiden name after her separation. Giggs recounted the surprise of his teammates when his passport was read aloud for the first time during a youth tournament.

Amidst the goodwill surrounding him, questions remain about Maguire’s future with Manchester United. With only eight months remaining on his contract, the 32-year-old will be eligible to negotiate with foreign clubs starting in January. When asked about a potential contract extension, manager Amorim responded cautiously, emphasizing the need to focus on immediate challenges.

“We are really happy with Harry, but it is not the time to discuss that. We need to concentrate on the present and the next game. He is vital for us,” Amorim stated.

Maguire’s transformation under Amorim has been notable. After being sidelined by Erik ten Hag and stripped of the captaincy, Maguire chose to fight back rather than walk away. His recent winning goal against Liverpool at Anfield has elevated his status to that of a cult hero among fans, marking United’s first victory in the red half of Merseyside since Wayne Rooney’s goal in January 2016. This was his 17th goal for the Red Devils and the fifth under the Portuguese manager.

“Harry Maguire is crucial for us and was particularly impactful today,” Amorim remarked. “He exemplifies resilience, serving as a role model for young athletes.”

While pleased with Maguire’s performance, Amorim has high expectations for him moving forward. “Playing with three center backs seems to suit him well, as it allows him to feel more comfortable in the central position. There’s potential for him to improve his playmaking abilities,” the manager noted.

“He is a key figure in our team, and while I am satisfied with his contributions, we must focus on future matches. The past is behind us, and we need to stay present.”

Maguire is set to return to action against Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday in the Premier League, as Manchester United aims to avenge their Europa League final defeat in North London.
