Semenyo Joins Manchester City Aiming to Forge His LegacySemenyo Joins Manchester City Aiming to Forge His Legacy

Antoine Semenyo has officially joined Manchester City after a successful three-year stint at Bournemouth, marking yet another significant acquisition for Pep Guardiola.

As a player with proven capabilities in the Premier League, Semenyo has already surpassed ten goals this season. His exceptional speed and precise finishing are seen as qualities that will flourish under the guidance of the esteemed Catalan coach. The 26-year-old is enthusiastic about starting his journey at City and is aware of the legacy he inherits, having taken the number 42 shirt formerly worn by Ivorian legend Yaya Toure.

Semenyo clarified that his choice of number was not influenced by Toure’s legacy. “It was the first number I had at Bristol City when I signed. It has always stuck with me. I was either going to be 42 or 24—since 24 wasn’t available, I reverted to my original number. That’s the inspiration behind it,” he explained.

Although Semenyo previously wore the number 24 at Bournemouth, he is now embracing the number 42, which evokes fond memories for him. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that he is the first City player to wear the number since Toure’s departure in 2018, during which time Toure made 316 appearances and scored 82 goals, contributing significantly to the club’s success, including three Premier League titles and three domestic cups.

Eager to establish his own legacy, Semenyo expressed his pride in joining Manchester City: “I am so proud to have joined Manchester City. I have followed the club over the past decade under Pep Guardiola, witnessing their dominance in the Premier League and their remarkable achievements in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. They have set the highest standards, boasting world-class players, facilities, and one of the greatest managers in Pep.”

“I have significant potential for improvement, and being at this club at this stage of my career is ideal for me. It’s a privilege to be here. I believe my best football is yet to come. City is in a strong position, still competing in four competitions, and I am confident that I can contribute to a successful second half of the season. The Etihad is my new home, and I am eager to play in front of the fans and showcase my abilities.”

Semenyo continued, emphasizing his desire to be part of a winning team: “You want to be involved in trophy-winning, playing alongside the best players in the world. I am grateful to be part of this team and look forward to winning many more trophies.”

Regarding the attributes he brings to the team, Semenyo described himself as “a powerful, quick, strong, and clinical player, but still improving. I feel I have yet to reach my peak. Joining City is the best decision for my development. The best coaches and players will elevate my game to the next level. I am excited to learn and grow alongside the talented young players here, and I aim to make history with the club.”

Semenyo is available for selection as City prepares for upcoming matches. While he may not feature in the FA Cup third-round clash against League One side Exeter at the Etihad on Saturday, he could make his debut in the first leg of the Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Tuesday.
