Christian G nter Approaches Milestone in SC Freiburg HistoryChristian G nter Approaches Milestone in SC Freiburg History

SC Freiburg marked a notable Europa League victory on Thursday night.

However, team captain Christian Günter, aged 32, will have to wait a bit longer to celebrate a personal milestone, as he remained on the bench for the second consecutive match. Günter is on the verge of setting a club record.

Freiburg’s head coach, Julian Schuster, has increasingly turned to young talent Jordy Makengo to fill the right-back position, leaving Günter on the sidelines. A product of the Freiburg academy, Günter has devoted his entire professional career to the club since making his debut in 2012, and he is now just one appearance away from surpassing Andreas Zeyer to become the most capped player in SC Freiburg’s history.

Having joined the SC Freiburg academy in 2007, Günter made his senior team debut in December 2012. Since then, he has accumulated 441 appearances for the club, including one match in the 3. Liga, which counts towards his total. Freiburg is poised to honor him as the all-time record holder once he steps onto the pitch.

Günter will eclipse the record previously held by midfielder Andreas Zeyer, who also made 441 appearances for Freiburg during two stints in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Vincenzo Grifo, a fellow player and current number two in all-time club records, expressed his hopes of celebrating this achievement with Günter after the upcoming Bundesliga match against St. Pauli.

“I hope he can celebrate on Sunday,” Grifo remarked about his close friend. “If he asks me to and wants me to have a glass of wine in the evening, then I’ll have two sips.”
