Benzema s Future at Al Ittihad Commitment and SpeculationBenzema s Future at Al Ittihad Commitment and Speculation

In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper ABC, Al-Ittihad’s sporting director, Planes, discussed the future of former Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. He stated that Benzema is eager to prolong his stay in Saudi Arabia, indicating a clear commitment to the club.

This assertion contradicts earlier reports from December, which claimed that Benzema was contemplating leaving Al-Ittihad upon the expiration of his contract this summer. French media outlet Foot Mercato noted that the 38-year-old had not finalized a new agreement, despite other sources suggesting that new terms had already been established.

When questioned about Benzema’s intentions, Planes affirmed, “He wants to stay; he is keen to continue in Saudi Arabia and with Al-Ittihad. He recognizes the serious project underway, supported by talented players.”

While Planes expressed confidence in retaining Benzema, the player himself has been less definitive in public statements regarding his future. In December, Benzema avoided specific inquiries about his contract’s conclusion, emphasizing his dedication to performing well for the remainder of his term. He remarked, “I’m really focused on what I’m doing, whether it’s for these last six months or for after if I extend my contract. Some people are better placed to talk about all that.”

Benzema continued, “Right now, I have six months left on my contract. So, I’m completely focused on football.”

His performance on the field supports the notion that he can contribute significantly beyond the 2026 season. Recently, Benzema scored a remarkable hat trick in just 22 minutes during a 4-0 victory against Al-Kholood. With 15 goals in 17 matches this season, conversations about a potential return to the French national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup have gained traction. Benzema expressed his readiness to return if summoned by coach Didier Deschamps.

“I’m a football player. So, I play football. When they call me, I come, I play,” he stated. “I have goals in my head. I love football and I love winning. I like trophies. That’s what matters most to me. I am currently at my club, and if I am called to the national team, I am ready to play football.”

Benzema also clarified his stance on the prospects of returning to the national team, stating, “It’s not a story of no longer wanting to come back to the French team. However, we must consider: what am I coming to do with the French team? We are talking about a World Cup; it’s not something to dismiss lightly.”

As he continues to give his all for Al-Ittihad, the reigning champions of the SPL find themselves nine points behind the league leaders but remain in a solid position to advance from the AFC Champions Cup group stage.
