Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup journey came to an abrupt end on Saturday as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to fellow Premier League rivals Aston Villa, exiting the tournament in the third round. The north London side found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime, with goals from Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers putting Villa firmly in control. Although Wilson Odobert’s second-half strike ignited a glimmer of hope for Spurs, their efforts to recover were ultimately in vain. Tensions flared post-match as Villa celebrated, nearly escalating into a brawl when Rogers directed his celebrations towards the away supporters.

Micky van de Ven defended the intensity shown by his teammates but emphasized the need for Spurs to demonstrate their passion from the outset of matches rather than in moments of adversity. “I think it’s good passion,” he stated to reporters. “But we shouldn’t be bringing this passion only when we are behind. If we start a game like this, it will be a whole different game. We need to do this for the full 90 minutes. Then we will be a totally different team. We have had too many ups and downs, playing at a good level one game and well below our standards in another. That consistency is what we need to work on.”

Currently, Spurs have managed to secure only one victory in their last seven competitive fixtures.

In terms of fitness updates, the return of Dominic Solanke as a second-half substitute offered some positive news for Spurs. However, they will have to cope with the potential loss of Richarlison, who appears to have sustained a hamstring injury.

Manager Thomas Frank commented, “It could look like that. I think we’ve done a lot of things right to get him where he is now. It’s not just about us; injuries are prevalent across the Premier League. I believe this is a matter for football authorities to address, considering the intense schedule we are facing. We played five games in 13 days, which is a tough ask.”

Reflecting on Spurs’ performance, he expressed disappointment, mentioning the strategy to field a strong team in an effort to secure a win. “We did everything we could, especially in the second half. Unfortunately, we were up against a strong Villa side that capitalized on two key moments to score. We managed just one goal.”

With their FA Cup campaign concluded, Spurs now turn their attention to their next Premier League match against West Ham, a game that carries significant importance for manager Frank.
