Macclesfield chairman Rob Smethurst expressed immense pride following his team’s remarkable 2-1 victory over reigning FA Cup champions Crystal Palace on Saturday, likening the achievement to winning the prestigious tournament itself. Smethurst enthusiastically noted that he was among the first to join fans on the pitch as they celebrated at full time.

Despite being ranked 117 places below their Premier League rivals, the Silkmen stunned their opponents, marking one of the most significant upsets in FA Cup history regarding league standings. Paul Dawson’s first-half header ignited the hopes of the home supporters, and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts further stunned Palace with a second goal after the interval.

The final whistle triggered a wave of jubilation as fans rushed onto the field to celebrate the momentous victory. “I legged it!” Smethurst recounted during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday. “I thought this is going to happen, and I knew I had to join in. I wanted to hug my players; I probably was the first on the pitch and caused quite a scene.”

He continued, “It was simply amazing for Macclesfield. The players celebrated until the early hours, and the atmosphere in the town was unforgettable. I returned home early to relive those incredible moments. For me, it felt as if we had won the FA Cup yesterday.”

The victory came against a backdrop of profound tragedy, as the club mourned the loss of forward Ethan McLeod, who tragically passed away in a car accident last month. His parents were present at the game and met the players in the dressing room afterward, with Smethurst ensuring they were included in the post-match celebrations. “I took them into the dressing room, which was an emotional moment for all of us,” he shared. “We presented them with Ethan’s boots, which he had left at the club. It was a deeply touching and upsetting experience.”

Reflecting on their recent hardships, Smethurst acknowledged, “The loss of such a wonderful young man has been incredibly difficult for our club and community. It will remain heartbreaking for us, but the players rallied together, and in that match, Ethan was our 12th man.”

Macclesfield’s extraordinary achievement of defeating FA Cup holders Crystal Palace has provided a beacon of hope and unity for the club and its supporters, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity.
