MLS Players Support Shift to Summer Spring CalendarMLS Players Support Shift to Summer Spring Calendar

Players in Major League Soccer (MLS) have expressed their endorsement of the league’s board of governors’ decision to align with the international calendar by shifting the regular season to a summer-to-spring format, beginning in 2027.

Currently, the MLS regular season runs from February to October, followed by playoffs in November and December. New England Revolution goalkeeper and US Men’s National Team member Matt Turner shared his insights with ESPN, stating, “This globalizes the league a little bit. The transfer windows are aligned, allowing for simultaneous business activities, as well as synchronized contract durations.”

Turner elaborated, “It feels odd to sign a contract that concludes on July 31 when MLS is in the midst of its season. I would prefer not to sign a contract in January in Europe, as teams are less inclined to engage in transfers during that period due to differing budget considerations. This shift will enhance player movement and fluidity. For instance, when I transitioned to Europe, it was frustrating to deal with a conflicting calendar.”

He recalled his own experience: “I signed with Arsenal in January but did not join until June, which meant playing a six-month season without a proper break. The recent offseason was my first genuine rest in five years.”

Under the new calendar, the MLS regular season is set to commence in mid-July and conclude in the spring, with Decision Day planned for April and playoffs scheduled for May. The league will also introduce a winter break from mid-December to early or mid-February, prioritizing player recovery.

Chicago Fire player Philip Zinckernagel noted the favorable implications for player fitness and mindset, stating, “This calendar change is beneficial because it includes a shorter summer break alongside a winter break. Previously, the long two-month break was unproductive. Having played in Europe for most of my life, I recognize that the new structure will be different. If MLS aspires to rank among the world’s elite leagues, this adjustment was necessary at some point.”

The league’s transition to a summer-to-spring calendar will also facilitate alignment with international transfer windows. Presently, the MLS primary transfer window is open from January 31 to April 23, while many international leagues operate within a traditional summer window. Vancouver Whitecaps player Sebastian Berhalter remarked, “This decision can undoubtedly open doors for players seeking opportunities overseas and attract international talent to MLS. It’s a wise choice, and many share this sentiment.”

For the year 2026, MLS will maintain its February-to-December schedule, implementing the new calendar in 2027. That year, a shortened season will run from February to May, culminating in the crowning of the MLS Cup champion before the league officially transitions to the summer/spring format.
