Mainz 05’s recent trip to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei ended with a draw that did not significantly aid their battle against relegation in the Bundesliga. As the league’s bottom team, Mainz requires more than mere draws to secure their place in the division this season. Additionally, the fact that they surrendered a two-goal lead within the last 13 minutes of the match offers little encouragement.

Despite the disappointing outcome, two former Union Berlin players now on Mainz’s roster maintained a relatively positive demeanor following the match. Mainz’s head coach Urs Fischer, who previously spent five years at Union, expressed satisfaction with his return to the club. Striker Benedict Hollerbach, who has faced challenges this season, celebrated scoring his first league goal for Mainz.

After 16 Bundesliga matchdays and 12 appearances, the 24-year-old Hollerbach finally broke his scoring drought. While he conveyed his frustration in a post-match interview, he also expressed relief at achieving this milestone at his former workplace. “A win would have been great for morale, and I have larger ambitions than just scoring one goal,” Hollerbach stated. “However, I am certainly pleased to have scored back at my old place of employment. This location has always felt comfortable for me for some reason. I hope this marks the beginning of greater things.”

In his post-match interview with Sky Germany, Fischer noted that the pressure of the situation can sometimes lead to hesitancy. “We needed to reward ourselves for our performance, and today’s match was one we absolutely had to win,” he remarked. Reflecting on his return as an opponent, he humorously mentioned that he was familiar with the correct entrance and had no trouble finding the guest locker room.

Fischer concluded by saying, “It was a wonderful day. I reunited with many colleagues with whom I shared significant successes. However, my primary focus remained on the match at hand.”
