The Guardian reports that Manchester United has finalized its interview process for a new caretaker coach. Currently, Darren Fletcher, the Under-18s manager, has been elevated to the first-team role, though he is not expected to remain in this position long-term.

Fletcher has struggled to make a convincing case for an extended tenure, as his initial performances have been disappointing. His term began with a 2-2 draw against Premier League relegation battlers Burnley, followed by an early exit from the FA Cup in the third round against Brighton.

According to The Guardian, United is expected to conclude its search for a new manager by Monday. Former Red Devils midfielder Michael Carrick is reportedly the frontrunner for the role, although no formal offer has been extended yet as preparations are underway.

Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox are said to be favoring Carrick after meeting with both him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who previously managed the team. Carrick met with club officials last Thursday, while Solskjaer returned to Manchester on Saturday. Solskjaer had been considered a strong candidate for the role, having previously taken charge following Jose Mourinho’s departure in December 2018, when he managed the team for nearly three years.

However, Carrick now seems to be in the lead. Berrada and Wilcox are keen to ensure that the new appointment has ample time to prepare for the upcoming derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Fletcher expressed uncertainty about the club’s managerial situation, especially after the 2-1 cup defeat to Brighton. He stated, “I’ve had no discussions. I will find out tomorrow morning. I have had zero indications. All my focus has been on this [Burnley and Brighton]. It is a massive responsibility to lead this club and I have given it my best and I am disappointed not to win a game. I think there are some good things there, but ultimately it wasn’t enough. I am more disappointed than anyone.”

Fletcher lamented the team’s early exit from both domestic cup competitions for the first time since the 1981-82 season and noted that United is on track for its lowest number of matches in 111 years, with only 40 games projected this season. He remarked, “That is where we are at. We can’t hide behind that. You can see that the players are fragile and need to build themselves up. Confidence is one of the most powerful things in football. When you don’t have confidence, you must dig deep — and you have to battle, grind, fight, work, win games — and then the confidence comes back.”

Fletcher emphasized the importance of character in challenging times, urging the players to demonstrate their commitment to Manchester United’s future, stating, “True character reveals itself in difficult times. They have to dig in and show they want to be part of Man United’s future. If you are not, I don’t think you should be here. They are experienced players, talented players, and I challenge them to regroup. It’s over to them.”

He added, “Someone is going to come in and lead them; they need to ensure they have a lot to play for this season. This team is still good enough to achieve success but must dig deep and find a way forward.”

Carrick, who previously managed Middlesbrough, has worked alongside Solskjaer at Old Trafford but is now positioned as the top candidate for the role. The upcoming match against arch-rivals Manchester City will be a significant test, followed by a challenging trip to Arsenal.
