Liam Rosenior, the newly appointed coach of Chelsea, dismissed the characterization of Arsenal as “Set Piece FC,” which implies a limited tactical approach focusing solely on set plays under manager Mikel Arteta.

In remarks made on Monday, just two days ahead of the teams’ first-leg clash in the English League Cup semifinals at Stamford Bridge, Rosenior stated, “I don’t know who’s labeling them this way—I certainly am not.”

Arsenal currently leads the Premier League by a six-point margin and has achieved six consecutive victories in the Champions League group phase. The team is demonstrating minimal weaknesses as they pursue their first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020, marking Arteta’s inaugural season in charge.

Set pieces have become a focal point of preparation for Arteta, with Arsenal ranking among the most formidable teams in England in this area, particularly with the return of Brazilian center-back Gabriel Magalhães to full fitness.

Rosenior acknowledged Arsenal’s multifaceted strengths, stating, “Arsenal are proficient in all aspects of the game. They are a strong team. It’s not about reverting to previous styles; it’s about optimizing every facet to ensure success in various ways.”

He further elaborated on their tactical prowess, noting, “They are exceptional both with and without the ball. Their approach is well-defined, and their organization is commendable, especially in set plays. This is essential for achieving success.”

Rosenior’s inaugural match in command of Chelsea resulted in a commanding 5-1 victory against second-tier Charlton Athletic during the FA Cup’s third round on Saturday.

He opted to rest England internationals Cole Palmer and Reece James due to ongoing management of their fitness, indicating they may return for the upcoming match against Arsenal.

The second leg of the semifinal is scheduled to take place at Arsenal on February 3. In the other semifinal, Newcastle will face Manchester City, with their first leg set for Tuesday.
