San Jose Earthquakes Near Signing of Timo Werner from RB LeipzigSan Jose Earthquakes Near Signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig

The San Jose Earthquakes are reportedly nearing a deal to sign forward Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, according to sources affiliated with ESPN.

While the agreement is not yet finalized, insiders suggest it is “likely” that Werner will be joining the Quakes. If the transfer is completed, he will bolster a revamped San Jose attack that has recently seen key players Cristian Espinoza and Josef Martínez depart via free agency. Last season, Espinoza and Martínez collectively contributed 18 goals and 14 assists for the team.

Werner is anticipated to be designated as a Designated Player for the Quakes, who have also secured forward Cristian Arango with a new contract extending through December 2027.

At the age of 29, Werner has had limited game time this season with Leipzig, making only three appearances totaling 13 minutes. He spent the preceding two seasons on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, where he netted just three goals across 41 league and cup matches.

Capped 57 times for the German national team, Werner’s peak performance occurred during his four-year tenure at RB Leipzig from 2016 to 2020, where he achieved an impressive tally of 95 goals in 159 league and cup outings. He subsequently joined Chelsea in the English Premier League, scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances across all competitions.

Werner’s professional journey began with VfB Stuttgart in 2013, having risen through their academy ranks. He made his international debut for Germany in 2017 and has since scored 24 goals, participating in notable tournaments such as the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

The Athletic was the first outlet to report on the impending transfer of Werner to Major League Soccer.
