Liverpool’s Center-Back Depth Tested as Konate Future Remains Uncertain

While Liverpool supporters celebrated Virgil van Dijk‘s new two-year contract earlier this year, concerns persist regarding the club’s central defensive depth. Ibrahima Konate has yet to agree to an extension, with his current deal expiring in 2026 amid links to Real Madrid.

Liverpool invested around £30 million in Parma defender Leoni in mid-August, intending to gradually integrate the Italy Under-19 international into the first team as he developed alongside Van Dijk and Konate. However, just weeks after arriving, Leoni suffered a serious ACL injury during a Carabao Cup match against Southampton.

“He tore his ACL and will be out for a year,” head coach Arne Slot confirmed. “He’s young and has many years ahead, but it’s a difficult moment.”

Liverpool’s Missed Defensive Targets

The club’s failure to secure Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace may soon prove costly. Meanwhile, 25-year-old Nico Schlotterbeck has been identified as a potential replacement if Konate leaves.

Schlotterbeck, capped 22 times for Germany, has impressed with Borussia Dortmund, drawing interest from both the Premier League and La Liga. However, recent reports suggest Liverpool are unlikely to pursue the 6ft 3in defender.

“BVB will be my first point of contact… I feel good,” Schlotterbeck said in October when asked about his future.

Ousmane Diomande Also Monitored

According to DaveOCKOP, Liverpool are tracking Ousmane Diomande of Sporting CP. Crystal Palace previously explored a deal worth £40–50 million for the 21-year-old as a possible Guehi successor. Liverpool’s interest, however, is described as “less aggressive.”

Reliance on Current Options Carries Risk

For now, Liverpool hope that Van Dijk and Konate remain fit, with Joe Gomez serving as depth. The club has invested heavily elsewhere this summer, notably in Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, but a lack of defensive reinforcement could prove costly—especially with goalkeeper Alisson also sidelined.

Liverpool sit seven points behind Arsenal after ten matches, and face a pivotal test against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. A defeat, combined with an Arsenal win, could undermine their title defense early in the season.
