Xabi Alonso has been relieved of his managerial duties at Santiago Bernabéu after only eight months in charge. During his tenure, he managed 34 matches, securing 24 victories. His last game as manager was a disappointing defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Reports suggest that Alonso encountered conflicts with key players, including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, which rendered his position increasingly precarious. Alvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as interim manager in the wake of Alonso’s departure.

Speculation is already swirling regarding potential replacements for Alonso at Real Madrid. Among the names being discussed is Jürgen Klopp, who stepped away from management after parting ways with Liverpool in 2024 and is currently serving as the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull.

The 58-year-old has not indicated any desire to return to coaching, especially not in the high-pressure environment of Madrid. Addressing the news of Alonso’s sudden exit while appearing as a pundit on Servus TV, Klopp responded to inquiries about contact from Madrid, stating, “It actually has – though not from Madrid. Yes, there were definitely a few people who felt they had to reach out to me directly about it.”

He further commented on the situation at Real Madrid, noting, “If Xabi Alonso, who has demonstrated his exceptional coaching abilities at Leverkusen over the past two years, is forced to leave Madrid just six months later, it highlights a few critical issues. Firstly, there seems to be a lack of patience nowadays. Secondly, the expectations at Real Madrid are evidently sky-high.”

Regarding the decision to dismiss Alonso immediately following a cup final loss, Klopp remarked, “This shows a lot about the current atmosphere. We had been hearing rumors for some time. I was genuinely surprised by the news. A few individuals reached out to me afterward, and I responded with various emojis.”

In a podcast interview with the Diary of CEO in October 2025, Klopp elaborated on his future aspirations, stating, “I have said I will never coach a team in England again, meaning Liverpool is theoretically possible. I am uncertain about my future but I truly enjoy my current role. I don’t miss the coaching grind or the pressures that come with it.”

Klopp has consistently refuted speculation linking him to coaching roles since his departure from Liverpool. At present, Enzo Maresca, former Chelsea boss who left Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day, is seen as the frontrunner to replace Alonso at the Bernabéu, along with discussions of a potential return for French legend Zinedine Zidane.
