Arbeloa Takes Charge at Real Madrid Following Alonso s DepartureArbeloa Takes Charge at Real Madrid Following Alonso s Departure

On Monday evening, Xabi Alonso was unexpectedly relieved of his duties as manager of Real Madrid, leaving the football community in disbelief. Reports from Spain had indicated that Alonso’s position was secure after successfully leading the team to the Supercopa de Espana final, where they eliminated Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals before succumbing to Barcelona in an exciting Clasico.

In response to this sudden change, Real Madrid has appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as interim manager. Arbeloa, a former right-back for the club, has spent the past six years working with the club’s youth systems and B team.

During his playing career at Real Madrid, Arbeloa made 237 appearances, notably during a three-year period under manager José Mourinho from 2010 to 2013. However, Arbeloa has sought to distance himself from comparisons to Mourinho’s coaching style, stating his intention to forge his own path.

At his inaugural press conference on Tuesday, Arbeloa remarked, “I haven’t spoken to him [Mourinho]. It was a privilege to be coached by him, and he had a great influence on my career. I intend to be my own person; if I try to emulate Mourinho, I believe I would fail spectacularly.”

Reflecting on his coaching influences, Arbeloa added, “I’ve learned from many coaches throughout my career, each contributing to my development. I aspire to take the best from each while maintaining my individuality. Many of these figures are legends in football, and I hope to achieve at least half of what they have accomplished.”

Arbeloa, a former teammate of Alonso at Real Madrid, Liverpool, and the Spanish national team, revealed that he reached out to Alonso after the announcement of his departure. “Upon learning of the club’s decision for Xabi and the mutual agreement to part ways, I contacted him. Our relationship is very close, and while our conversation remains private, I want to emphasize my enthusiasm for starting my first game. I am excited to lead a talented squad and maintain a strong friendship with Xabi, who wished me all the best.”

Currently, Real Madrid trails Barcelona by four points in La Liga and sits in seventh place in the Champions League standings after losses to Liverpool and Manchester City. Despite this, Arbeloa remains optimistic about the season ahead. “We have a promising season before us, and I am focused on ensuring that the players are available and ready to work together. Their happiness on the pitch is paramount, and wearing this badge is the pinnacle of achievement. Our ambition is to compete for every title available.”

Arbeloa’s first match in charge will be on Wednesday, as Real Madrid faces Albacete away in the Copa del Rey.
