The Future of Wout Weghorst A Return to FC TwenteThe Future of Wout Weghorst A Return to FC Twente

What does the future hold for Wout Weghorst? It is almost certain that it does not lie with Ajax, but will the striker actually return to his roots?

Prior to signing a contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the Dutch international openly expressed interest in FC Twente. When he ultimately opted for a move to Amsterdam, he faced backlash from the Twente supporters. His first appearance back at De Grolsch Veste ended with him being booed.

“That’s the Twente temperament,” one might say.

But how will the fans react to him now? Is there still a possibility for reconciliation? Departing technical director Jan Streuer seems to have a perspective on this matter: “The supporters of FC Twente can turn hostile very quickly. For instance, if we say Weghorst isn’t coming, people will respond with anger, citing, ‘That jerk is never welcome here again.’ However, I am confident that if he does come, the mood would shift significantly. That’s the essence of the Twente temperament. The supporters are passionate about what’s best for FC Twente, but they expect no negativity towards the club, except from themselves. On social media, things can get out of hand with insults and harsh language, which is unfortunate. Thankfully, 95% of the people don’t engage in that behavior. Yet, the comments from that small group do resonate.”

Weghorst himself has previously noted, “As a young boy, I attended FC Twente matches with my brothers. We were in Vak-P, the passionate section of FC Twente. It’s something I’ve always said: yes, I would love to play there again in my career…”
