Manchester City announced on Wednesday the signing of U.S. women’s national team midfielder Sam Coffey on a 3½-year contract.

According to sources reported by ESPN, the transfer fee is approximately $875,000 (£650,000).

“Sam’s reputation as one of the world’s best speaks for itself, and we’re delighted that she chose to join us over other potential suitors,” stated Therese Sjogran, Manchester City Women’s director of football. “We believe she possesses all the qualities necessary to excel at City and, more broadly, in the Women’s Super League (WSL). We are excited to see how she can enhance our already impressive squad.”

“Sam is currently at the peak of her performance, and her decision to join us reflects the remarkable progress we have made as a club and the ambitions we hold for the future.”

Currently, Manchester City is six points clear at the top of the Women’s Super League, positioning themselves strongly to secure their first league title since 2016.

Multiple sources indicate that City has been interested in Coffey for some time. The club has been seeking to bolster its midfield depth since last summer and was willing to wait for the right opportunity, having made prior inquiries about her availability.

Coffey expressed her eagerness to play in Europe, stating, “I think I’m at a stage in my career where I feel ready and settled as a professional. It feels like the perfect time to challenge myself in this way. The fact that it is official, that I am here, and that it is all real is incredibly exciting, and I couldn’t be happier.”

The 27-year-old midfielder spent three years with Portland Thorns FC after completing her college career, during which she captained the team to the NWSL playoff semifinals in 2025.

In a farewell video on the Portland Thorns website, Coffey remarked, “For as long as I’ve played soccer, I have always dreamed of competing professionally in Europe, and it’s something I must pursue. I would never forgive myself if I didn’t take this opportunity.”

Coffey has earned 42 caps for the U.S. national team, scoring five goals and providing four assists, and she was part of the squad that triumphed at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
