Georgia Stanway Announces Departure from Bayern MunichGeorgia Stanway Announces Departure from Bayern Munich

Georgia Stanway made the switch from Manchester City to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022. Since then, she has made 106 appearances for the German club, scoring 26 goals and securing three Frauen Bundesliga titles. At 27 years old, Stanway has also celebrated a DFB-Pokal Cup victory and two Supercup wins. However, she has decided to depart from Bayern when her contract concludes this summer. The decision, she stated, was “incredibly difficult,” and she expressed her gratitude towards Bayern while hoping to finish the season on a high note.

In a statement released over the weekend, Stanway remarked, “I am incredibly grateful to Bayern for the past years and, thankfully, my time here isn’t over yet. The decision to leave Munich and my team was incredibly difficult and definitely not easy for me. I’ve made friends and memories here that will last a lifetime, and I’ve also been able to develop enormously as a player and as a person. I will give everything for the club and its sporting success until my very last day, just as I have for the past three and a half years, and I want to say goodbye to the club and the fans at the end of the season with as many titles as possible.”

Upon the announcement of her impending departure, Bayern’s director of women’s football, Bianca Rech, praised Stanway as a pioneering English player who had “stolen the club’s hearts.” Rech stated on Bayern’s website, “As the first English player at FC Bayern Women, Georgia Stanway not only made history but also stole our hearts. She matured into a top European player in Munich and played a key role in the club’s success in recent years with her commitment and character. We talked openly about her future, and when she expressed her desire to explore new opportunities, her reasons were completely understandable. We thank her for the time we spent together and wish her all the best for the future. However, we still have a few months left, and we will strive for success together.”

Rumors regarding Stanway’s potential move from Bayern began circulating at the turn of the year, and she has now confirmed her intent to embark on a new journey in 2026. According to Sky Germany’s reporter Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal has engaged in “concrete talks” with Stanway about a summer transfer as she will become a free agent. Nonetheless, other clubs are also interested in her signature, indicating that the Gunners may face competition.

While speculation continues about her next destination, Stanway remains focused on helping Bayern secure another league title. The team currently holds a six-point lead at the top of the table and is competing in the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and DFB-Pokal, leaving plenty at stake in the season’s second half.
