Michael Carrick has rejoined Manchester United as the caretaker manager of the first team, following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Carrick, who enjoyed a successful playing career at the club winning all major honors, previously assumed a similar role after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit in 2021. He has expressed his desire to see his team play an exhilarating style of football that will engage the fans, especially after a challenging period under Amorim, which included the club’s worst-ever finish and disappointing early exits in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season.

There is speculation that Carrick could be considered for a long-term position, contingent upon his performance until the season’s end. However, former Manchester United player Gary Neville believes that the club should pursue a more experienced manager. He commented on the Stick to Football podcast, “I hope he does really well, but there should be no consideration for Michael beyond this season. Even if he wins every game, we need to look at more experienced candidates like Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, and Carlo Ancelotti, who has the temperament and background suited for the Premier League.”

Neville’s former teammate, Roy Keane, also mentioned potential candidates, including PSG’s Luis Enrique and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone. In response to doubts about their willingness to join the club, Keane emphasized, “It’s concerning that we’re discussing options and already ruling some out. Manchester United should aim to attract the best of the best.”

Keane further commented on the club’s recent player acquisitions, stating, “I could provide a list of players who have played for Manchester United over the past 20-30 years. Personally, I might question their status as top players, yet they’ve managed the pressures of representing United. The challenge is not only to perform technically but also to live up to the expectations of winning every match. Carrick must embrace this challenge and encourage his players to move forward, unencumbered by the past.”

Carrick’s tenure begins with two formidable matches against Manchester City and Arsenal. This daunting start is compounded by the team’s recent FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton. However, he will gain a boost with the return of attackers Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo, who are expected to be included in the squad for the upcoming match against City this Saturday.
