Recent reports indicate that 31-year-old Bruno Fernandes is reevaluating his options after the dismissal of fellow countryman Ruben Amorim from his managerial position at Old Trafford. The club has appointed Darren Fletcher on a caretaker basis, with Michael Carrick now serving as interim manager.

Manchester United aims to make a permanent managerial appointment by summer, at which point Fernandes is expected to make a decision regarding his long-term future. He is currently contracted until 2027 and has spent six years in Manchester, making 310 appearances and scoring 103 goals.

As captain at Old Trafford, Fernandes plays a pivotal role for a team that has faced inconsistencies in recent seasons. According to BBC Sport, the Portugal international remains dedicated to the club. He has frequently mentioned his intention to reassess his situation after competing for global accolades alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and others in the 2026 World Cup.

Fernandes recently disclosed that United considered transferring him during the summer of 2025 after receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi club Al-Hilal. He expressed feelings of disappointment, stating, “From the club’s side, I felt a bit like, ‘if you leave, it’s not so bad for us.’ It hurts me a bit.”

He elaborated: “More than hurting, it makes me sad because I’m a player who has nothing to criticize. I’m always available, I always play, good or bad. I give my all. Then, you see things around you, players who don’t value the club as much and don’t defend the club as much… that makes you sad.”

Fernandes emphasized his loyalty, stating he never considered demanding a transfer for financial gain due to his deep affection for the club. However, he acknowledged a shift in priorities at the club: “It gets to a point where, for them, money is more important than anything. The club wanted me to go, I have that in my head. I told the directors that, but I think they didn’t have the courage to make that decision, because the manager wanted me. If I had said I wanted to leave, they would have let me go.”

Given the likelihood that United may look to sell Fernandes while still being able to command a fee, the club is also exploring options for midfield reinforcements, especially with veteran Brazilian star Casemiro nearing the end of his contract.

According to The Sun, United is reportedly optimistic about securing Brighton’s 22-year-old midfielder, Carlos Baleba, during the summer transfer window. Baleba has been on United’s radar for some time, although his performance levels have dipped slightly in the current season, which may make Brighton open to negotiations for a lucrative sale.

Baleba is not the only target for United; they are also considering other alternatives, including Nottingham Forest playmaker Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth star Alex Scott, as potential acquisitions for the upcoming summer window.
