This weekend marks the entry of Premiership clubs into the Scottish Cup, with several compelling matchups on the horizon.

Among the three all-top-flight fixtures scheduled for Saturday, the clash between Falkirk and Hearts (20:00 GMT) stands out as particularly captivating.

Hearts are currently soaring at the top of the Premiership, holding a six-point advantage over their closest rivals following a hard-fought victory against St Mirren midweek. After an early exit from the Premier Sports Cup this season, Derek McInnes’ team is eager to make a deep run in the Scottish Cup, especially with new signings enhancing their squad this month.

On the other side, Falkirk gave a strong account of themselves in their recent match against Celtic, narrowly losing 1-0. Despite the defeat, John McGlynn’s squad has had an impressive campaign thus far. In their two league encounters this season, Hearts have triumphed over Falkirk, who have yet to score against them. However, Falkirk previously prevailed in their last knockout meeting, winning 2-0 at home during the League Cup in August 2024, and they also claimed a 3-2 victory at Tynecastle in January 2015 when both teams were in the Championship. To replicate their past success, Falkirk must overcome Hearts’ formidable 13-game unbeaten streak at home this season.

Benjamin Nygren cemented his position as Celtic’s leading scorer with a decisive goal against Falkirk midweek. The 24-year-old Swedish midfielder has now netted 12 goals this season, surpassing last year’s top scorer, Daizen Maeda, by five goals. Nygren has emerged as a versatile attacking option for Celtic since his summer transfer from Nordsjaelland, demonstrating proficiency with both feet and in aerial duels while also adapting to various positions on the pitch. Under Martin O’Neill’s renewed leadership, Nygren is expected to assume his preferred midfield role in Sunday’s match against Auchinleck Talbot at Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park (17:30).

Meanwhile, Peter Leven’s third tenure as interim manager of Aberdeen has begun under challenging circumstances, with successive 2-0 defeats to Rangers leaving the atmosphere at Pittodrie rather subdued following the departure of Scottish Cup-winning manager Jimmy Thelin earlier this month. The Dons are currently mired in a seven-match winless streak, having secured only one draw during this period. They will commence their Scottish Cup title defense at home against Championship side Raith Rovers on Sunday (14:30).

Raith Rovers have experienced a resurgence under manager Dougie Imrie, who joined from Greenock Morton in November, although they have only managed one victory in their last five matches. They head to Pittodrie without the burden of pressure. Notably, Rovers secured a 2-1 win in their last knockout meeting at home during the League Cup in August 2021 and triumphed 1-0 at Pittodrie in their most recent Scottish Cup confrontation in February 2010. A repeat of such results would certainly make headlines, a reality that Leven is all too aware of.

O’Neill has urged patience regarding Celtic’s transfer dealings, acknowledging that despite being perceived as underdogs, Hearts continue to set the pace in the Premiership.
