Financial Gains for Chelsea as Marc Guehi Prepares for Man City MoveFinancial Gains for Chelsea as Marc Guehi Prepares for Man City Move

The West London club is poised to benefit financially from Marc Guehi’s impending transfer to Manchester City, having included a sell-on clause when the defender joined Crystal Palace in 2021. The 25-year-old centre-back is set to finalize his move to the Etihad Stadium in the coming days, with Manchester City agreeing to a fee of £20 million to secure his services.

As part of the original agreement that facilitated Guehi’s transfer from Stamford Bridge to Selhurst Park, Chelsea incorporated a clause entitling them to 20% of any future transfer fee. This provision means that Chelsea is expected to receive approximately £4 million once the transfer is officially completed, more than four years after Guehi departed the club. City has identified the England international as a priority target, moving to secure him mid-season to avoid potential competition should he have entered the final stages of his contract.

Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has indicated that the deal is nearing completion, confirming that Guehi will not participate in their next match. This news comes as a double blow for Eagles fans, as Glasner also announced his intention to leave the club in the summer.

In a candid interview, Glasner stated, “My latest understanding is that the deal for Marc is in the final stages. I cannot confirm the club’s latest status. It’s not finalized, but the result is that Marc won’t play tomorrow for us. Every player has a price that the club is willing to accept, and when a player expresses a desire to move, a deal materializes. It appears that is the case now.”

However, Glasner’s announcement was not the only disappointing news, as he expressed his desire for a new challenge. He revealed, “A decision was made months ago. I had a meeting with Steve [Parish] during the international break in October, where we had an extensive discussion. I informed him that I would not be renewing my contract. We agreed that it was best to keep this matter confidential for three months. Now that clarity is essential, and given our busy schedule, we felt it best not to address it sooner. Steve and I both want what is best for Crystal Palace.”

Guehi, who came through Chelsea’s academy, made only two senior appearances for the club before a loan period at Swansea City led to his transfer to Palace, where he established himself as a captain and one of the Premier League’s most dependable defenders. This additional revenue provides a boost for Chelsea, whose head coach, Liam Rosenior, recently signed a long-term contract through 2032 after succeeding Enzo Maresca. The extra funds represent the final link between Guehi and the Premier League club, which has always maintained an interest in potentially bringing the England international back to Stamford Bridge.

Guehi’s transfer to City is anticipated to be announced shortly, offering much-needed relief for Pep Guardiola as they head into the second half of the campaign. The team is currently missing key players such as John Stones, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol, who are not expected to return soon. This transfer marks a significant advancement for Guehi, who was on the verge of joining Liverpool at the end of the summer transfer window. With City paying half of what Liverpool was willing to invest, they believe the deal represents a bargain, even with Guehi in the final year of his contract and available as a free agent this summer.
