United’s Managerial Search: Carrick Interim, Enrique a Strong Contender

Manchester United will not make a permanent managerial appointment until the summer, with Michael Carrick stepping in as the interim manager following Darren Fletcher’s tenure as caretaker.

Carrick is tasked with the crucial objective of securing European qualification for a club currently experiencing its lowest performance in 111 years during the 2025-26 season.

While Carrick has the opportunity to solidify his position, the club is expected to pursue a more seasoned tactician. Names such as Oliver Glasner, Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate, Enzo Maresca, and Mauricio Pochettino have all been mentioned in connection with the managerial role.

Additionally, Luis Enrique’s name has emerged as a potential candidate. The passionate Spaniard has achieved significant success during his time at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. At 55, he has demonstrated an ability to thrive under pressure and fulfill ambitious goals while maintaining player rapport.

Kleberson, a former Red Devils star, expressed his desire to see Enrique take the helm at Manchester United. He stated, “For me, I really want to see Luis Enrique at Man United. Not just because he is an exceptional coach, but also because his teams develop a strong connection with him. Players are eager to play in his style and are committed to both the club and the coach. This is something United needs to regain.”

Kleberson drew parallels to the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasizing the importance of a coach who inspires players to work hard. He noted that while Carrick is a good interim choice given his familiarity with the team, the club must act swiftly in deciding on a permanent manager to establish a clear tactical vision.

“They cannot wait until the end of the season to bring in a prominent coach; hesitation could lead to another interim situation with Carrick,” he cautioned.

The new manager will face significant challenges, particularly in rebuilding the midfield. Club captain Bruno Fernandes is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, while veteran Brazilian player Casemiro’s contract is nearing its expiration.

Kleberson expressed hope that key players would remain, particularly Fernandes, who he believes is vital for revitalizing the team. He underscored the need for stability, stating, “Everything depends on who the manager will be. If Luis Enrique comes in, it could shift players’ perspectives and encourage them to stay, as they would want to play under a great coach.”

Carrick’s inaugural match will be against arch-rivals Manchester City, followed by a clash with Premier League leaders Arsenal. Should results not improve quickly, the club’s interest in Enrique and other managerial candidates will likely intensify, especially as Enrique has yet to agree on a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain and may be open to a new challenge.
