According to reports from The Sun, Harry Maguire will remain at Manchester United throughout this month, as the club intends to decline all offers for a mid-season transfer. Interest has been expressed from AC Milan and several Premier League teams, with a more competitive bidding war anticipated for the England international’s services this summer if he does not extend his contract at Old Trafford.

Maguire currently has only six months remaining on his contract, and it is still uncertain whether he will agree to an extension until at least 2027 or leave as a free agent. This uncertainty follows earlier reports of contract negotiations that took place in October.

Former head coach Ruben Amorim had triggered a one-year extension to his contract in January 2025, citing a need for leadership within the squad. The impact of his recent dismissal on Maguire’s future remains ambiguous, especially with the likelihood of a new manager being appointed following Michael Carrick’s tenure.

Maguire is Manchester United’s third most expensive signing and holds the world record for a defender’s transfer, having moved from Leicester City for £80 million (approximately $107 million) in 2019. Although he has encountered difficulties during his time at Old Trafford, he has also gained popularity among fans due to his leadership and commitment. Notably, his late goal in a 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield in October has been highlighted as a peak moment in his career at United.

This season, Maguire has been sidelined for 10 of the Red Devils’ 21 league matches due to injuries, which raises concerns about his long-term prospects at the club. Reports suggest that Manchester United is already considering Murillo as a potential replacement.

For now, Maguire is expected to continue at Old Trafford. Carrick has made it clear that he wants the club to reject any mid-season transfer approaches, while assistant manager Steve Holland holds Maguire in high regard, owing to their eight years together in the England setup under Gareth Southgate.

Maguire was well-regarded by Amorim, who said in December 2024 that the veteran defender serves as a role model for the rest of the team. He emphasized that Maguire remains focused on his responsibilities, undeterred by external criticism.

In a gesture of respect following Amorim’s recent dismissal, Maguire expressed his gratitude through an Instagram post, stating, “Thank you for everything boss. I wish you all the best in the future.”

With his future still in flux, Maguire hopes to return to Premier League action in the upcoming Manchester derby this weekend. He made a brief return as a substitute in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion after recovering from a hamstring injury.

At 32 years old, he has an outside chance of being included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup, provided he plays a pivotal role for United in the remainder of the season. His last appearance for the national team was in September 2024, and he has not been named in any squad since Tuchel’s appointment.

Should Tuchel depart his role at St. George’s Park after the World Cup, he could become United’s next permanent manager, while Maguire aims to have his club future settled before the end of the domestic season.
