Chelsea s Transfer Strategy Aiming for Defensive ReinforcementsChelsea s Transfer Strategy Aiming for Defensive Reinforcements

According to a report from The Telegraph, Chelsea FC is actively seeking to equip manager Rosenior with the necessary resources to mold the team to his vision. A primary focus for the club is to recruit a new central defender, a move they had planned under former manager Maresca. Last summer, Chelsea missed out on signing Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, highlighting the urgency of bolstering their defensive lineup.

The six-time league champions are particularly eager to secure a center-back due to Levi Colwill’s long-term injury sustained during pre-season. Additionally, Wesley Fofana continues to face fitness struggles, having previously endured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and a broken leg in his career.

Chelsea is also believed to be scouting potential midfield and attacking targets ahead of the summer transfer window, with co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital prepared to seize opportunities during the upcoming winter market.

One player garnering Chelsea’s attention is the highly-rated Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that discussions between the two clubs have taken place in the last 24 hours. However, Benjamin Quarez from Les Parisien indicates that Rennes is unwilling to sell Jacquet this month, as they remain in contention for European qualification, sitting sixth in Ligue 1. A separate report from French football writer Fabrice Hawkins suggests that Chelsea is ready to present a €50 million (£43.3m/$58m) offer for Jacquet.

Emerging from Rennes’ esteemed academy, which has produced talents like Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, and Eduardo Camavinga, Jacquet is viewed as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders. The 20-year-old made his professional debut for Les Rennais in January 2024 and has since been loaned to lower-league side Clermont Foot. He extended his loan until the end of the 2024-25 season but was recalled by Rennes in February last year, subsequently signing a contract extension with the club until 2029.

While Jacquet remains Chelsea’s primary target to strengthen their defense, the Daily Mail reports that the club has compiled a list of alternative signings should negotiations with Rennes not materialize. Among the alternatives are Jacobo Ramon, 21, who currently plays for Como in Serie A, and Bournemouth’s 28-year-old center-back, Marcos Senesi, who may be available at a reduced price due to his contract expiring in the summer.

As Chelsea aims to enhance their squad in three key areas this January, they will return to Premier League action against high-flying Brentford on Saturday. This match marks Rosenior’s first league game in charge after his appointment from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. He recently led Chelsea to an FA Cup victory over Charlton Athletic before their narrow defeat in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal.

Anticipating a challenging encounter against Brentford, currently positioned fifth and two points ahead of Chelsea, Rosenior stated in his pre-match press conference: “They are a proper team in every phase of the game. All 11 players are willing to defend. They excel in set-pieces, whether from long throws, wide free-kicks, or corners. They display a commendable team ethic without ego. Their organization is robust, as is the case with every Premier League team. We thoroughly prepare and spare no effort to understand the threats Brentford poses, and we recognize that they are equally aware of our strengths. We must reach a high level to compete effectively.”
