The South London club is currently engulfed in turmoil as notable departures have been confirmed. Manager Oliver Glasner announced on Friday that he will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, a decision made last October as he seeks a “new challenge.” To further complicate matters, the club has agreed to sell team captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City for an initial fee of £20 million (€23 million and $26.7 million). This decision has resulted in significant friction, with Glasner openly criticizing the board for selling a key player just one day before a crucial match.

Anticipation of further player movement mounts, particularly with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta expressing interest in a new challenge, as Juventus has initiated discussions with his representatives for a possible transfer. Following the summer sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, the club now faces a daunting period of transition and the potential loss of its top talents, leaving a substantial rebuilding task for the next manager. Glasner has expressed that frustrations within the club have reached a boiling point.

After the match, Glasner shared his sentiments with the BBC, stating, “I feel we are being abandoned completely. I can’t blame any player; they did everything they could, and this has been ongoing for weeks and months now. We currently have only 12 or 13 players available, and we feel no support. The most troubling aspect is selling our captain just one day prior to a Premier League game.

“We are preparing; this is the first full week of training we’ve had since September, and then we sell our captain. I have no understanding of this decision. I’ve always kept my opinions to myself, but I must defend these players. It was our 35th game today. Yes, we are under pressure and experiencing some bad luck, but we cannot react to these circumstances. It makes things really tough.”

Glasner continued, “If your heart is torn out twice in one season, once with Eze in the summer and now with Guehi, what should I communicate to the players? In the first 50 to 60 minutes, it was challenging given the circumstances. I look at the bench and see only young players. This situation has been developing for weeks. That’s why I am truly frustrated today.”

When asked if he considered leaving before the end of the season, Glasner replied, “No, never. I would never leave. I will stand by this group of players until the end. I have immense respect for their character. I see their disappointment and how hard they are working and fighting at the end. I have no intention of leaving. I told the players that we must stick together; if we don’t receive support, it’s up to us. There is no one else; we are the only ones who can play.”

Glasner is now left to strategize without his captain and potentially lose talismanic striker Mateta in the coming weeks. Additionally, there looms the imminent London derby against Chelsea, with uncertainty surrounding whether Glasner will be present in the dugout for this pivotal clash.
