Wrexham Football Club has officially announced that their club captain, Jimmy McClean, has departed the team by mutual consent to join the Irish club, Derry City.

At 36 years old, McClean joined Wrexham in 2023 and quickly became a key player, contributing significantly to the team’s success as they achieved back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship. Over the course of his two-and-a-half years with the club, he made a total of 95 league appearances.

Returning to Derry City, a team that competes in the top tier of Irish football, McClean will reunite with his younger brother, Patrick, who recently rejoined the club.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson commented, “I had a good conversation with Jimmy last week. The timing is right for him and his family, as he has always wanted to settle back in his hometown and now has the opportunity to conclude his career there.”

He added, “Jimmy has been an outstanding servant to the club, and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with him. He has played a vital role for us in recent years, demonstrating drive, determination, and professionalism. We wish him and his family nothing but the best in this next chapter of his career.”

Throughout his career, McClean has also made notable appearances in the Premier League with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, and he earned 103 caps for the Republic of Ireland before retiring from international football in 2023.
