A highly-anticipated match, with continental silverware at stake, was briefly interrupted following the awarding of a contentious penalty. This decision, perceived as soft and favoring the home team, sparked significant outrage among Senegal’s players and coaching staff.

The game was temporarily halted as several members of Senegal’s team, led by head coach Pape Thiaw, walked off the field in protest. Notably, Sadio Mane, currently a teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, remained on the pitch to engage with the match officials.

Mane played a pivotal role in rallying his teammates to return to the field, allowing the game to resume. Ultimately, the penalty was missed, as Diaz executed an unusual Panenka attempt that was easily saved by Edouard Mendy, and Pape Gueye’s strike in the 94th minute secured the win for Senegal.

After leading Senegal to their second AFCON title as captain, Mane spoke to reporters about his decision to avoid escalating the situation further. He explained, “When they decided to walk off, I stayed and consulted with a few others, asking whether it was wise. In the end, I chose to bring everyone back onto the pitch because this is football. Sometimes referees make mistakes, and what truly matters is respecting the game. Stopping a match over a contentious call isn’t fair.”

Thiaw later expressed regret over his initial reaction, stating, “I didn’t appreciate that I instructed my players to leave the field. I apologize for that. After some reflection, I brought them back. It’s understandable to react emotionally, but we accept the referee’s mistakes and apologize to the sport.”

Mane further elaborated on the global significance of football, saying, “Football is special; it captivates the world. We must present a positive image of the sport. It would be absurd to abandon the game just because of a penalty decision, especially in African football. I’d rather lose than let such incidents tarnish our sport.”

Former Morocco international Hassan Kachloul lauded Mane’s conduct, stating, “Mane’s decision to return to the field and bring his teammates back was commendable. It illustrates the character of a great leader.”

At 33 years old and with 126 international caps, Mane announced that he would not participate in future AFCON tournaments. “I am content, but as I’ve mentioned, my AFCON journey ends here. I will support the team until the World Cup, but after that, it’s over for me,” he said.

Thiaw expressed a desire for Mane to reconsider his decision, emphasizing, “The nation is not in agreement with his choice, and neither am I. Mane represents not only Africa but the world; his contribution is invaluable. He has dedicated himself to our team’s success and deserves to continue playing. If I had to sign a document allowing him to leave, I would refuse, as would his teammates.”

Senegal has been placed in Group I for the 2026 World Cup, where they will compete against France, Norway, featuring Erling Haaland, and the winner of an inter-confederation playoff.
