Cunha Expresses Optimism for Manchester United Under CarrickCunha Expresses Optimism for Manchester United Under Carrick

Matheus Cunha, forward for Manchester United, is optimistic about the team’s prospects under interim coach Michael Carrick, especially after securing a 2-0 victory against Manchester City in Carrick’s first match in charge.

Carrick, 44, has taken the helm at United until the end of the season, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim after 14 months at the club.

Cunha commented on Carrick’s appointment, stating, “We’re still getting to know [Michael] Carrick. He’s a highly respected figure, not just at United, but throughout the Premier League as well,” as reported by Globoesporte.

This marks the second time Carrick, a former United player, has served as caretaker coach, having previously led the team for three games during the 2021-22 season.

Despite skepticism from United legend and television pundit Roy Keane regarding Carrick’s return, Cunha praised him, saying, “He has established a positive legacy here and brings with him a winning mentality that aligns with the club’s values. He understands the path to success.”

Cunha regarded Saturday’s outcome as “the most important victory” since his arrival at Old Trafford last summer, following his £62.5 million ($83.7 million) transfer from Wolves. Coming on as a substitute, he played a pivotal role by assisting Patrick Dorgu in scoring the team’s second goal against City.

Reflecting on the match, Cunha remarked, “Considering the overall context, this was the most significant victory since I joined United. We recognize the importance of this match and the caliber of our opponent. It’s one of the most challenging fixtures in England. However, representing a club of Manchester United’s stature, we must always strive to perform at our best, particularly on such occasions.”

He added, “The expectations are high, and we must meet them. I am pleased to have contributed with an assist, but I am even more delighted with the three points. May this mark the beginning of a new chapter for our team.”

Currently, Manchester United sits in fifth place in the Premier League, just one position and one point behind fourth-placed Liverpool, who currently occupy the last Champions League qualifying spot. United, absent from European competition this season, were eliminated from the FA Cup earlier this month.

Cunha concluded, “Now we have the remainder of the season to focus solely on the league, and our objective is to return to the Champions League. Our success depends entirely on us, and we will give our utmost effort.”
