James McClean, who has notable Premier League experience from his tenures at Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, made the decision to join Wrexham AFC in League Two in 2023. During his time with the Red Dragons, he played a pivotal role in achieving back-to-back promotions, completing an impressive hat-trick for the club. He took on captaincy responsibilities, amassing over 100 appearances while winning the hearts of Wrexham’s supporters.

Having now relocated from North Wales to Northern Ireland, McClean carries with him many fond memories from his time at Wrexham. His commitment to the club resonated deeply with the local fans and the club’s prominent figures, as he consistently dedicated himself to every challenge, often stirring the passions of rival supporters.

In an emotional farewell shared on Instagram, McClean expressed his gratitude to Wrexham: “I’ve been reflecting on what this club @wrexham_afc has meant to me since I signed. No matter how I phrase it, words can hardly capture my feelings. It’s been an incredibly enjoyable couple of years. I extend my heartfelt thanks to @vancityreynolds and @robmac for the opportunity to be a part of the magic that is Wrexham, or as some outsiders may call it, ‘Disney FC’. I am grateful to the management staff for believing in me and allowing me the honor of captaining this club to historic heights, as well as to the medical and ground staff, and the fans who welcomed me without any reservations. This club has shown nothing but class in making my transition back home seamless.

“I also want to acknowledge my fellow players with whom I shared both challenges and triumphs, creating lasting friendships along the way. My only regret is not having joined this journey a few years earlier, as the club is destined for more success in the future. It has been a true honor, and I wish nothing but success for the team moving forward. Up the history-making back-to-back Red Dragons!”

Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, commented on McClean’s departure, stating that the timing was appropriate for him and his family to return to their hometown. “He has been a tremendous asset to the club, and we’ve enjoyed working with him. His drive, determination, and professionalism have made a significant impact, and we wish him and his family all the best in this new chapter.”

As McClean departs, Wrexham currently stands 10th in the Championship, three points shy of the playoff positions. The club is poised for continued investment in their promotion efforts, having already committed over £30 million during an unprecedented spending spree in the summer of 2025.
