Manchester City has confirmed the acquisition of Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace.

Guéhi joins the club for an initial transfer fee of £20 million ($27 million), with potential add-ons included in the deal. The 25-year-old England international has penned a five-and-a-half-year contract, ensuring his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.

He arrived in Manchester on Sunday to undergo a medical examination and finalize his contract. Although he will not be eligible to debut against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League on Tuesday, he could make his first appearance in the Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad on Saturday.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Guéhi stated, “I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player. This transfer feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career. I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players. It feels good to be able to say that.

“I love football—it has given me so much for so long—and to be able to continue my development at Manchester City is a truly special moment for me and my family. I absolutely cannot wait to get started. I want to meet my teammates, train hard, understand what the manager expects of me, and then show the City fans what I can do.”

Sources indicate that City expedited the acquisition of Guéhi in response to injuries sustained by Josko Gvardiol, Rúben Dias, and John Stones. Initially, club management had planned to pursue Guéhi during the summer transfer window, anticipating that he might leave Selhurst Park as a free agent.

The former Chelsea youth player becomes the second signing in January for City, following the £64 million acquisition of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth. Like Guéhi, Semenyo will not be eligible to participate against Bodo/Glimt but can be registered for the knockout rounds.

City representatives view the commitment from both Guéhi and Semenyo to dedicate the peak years of their careers to the club amid competition from top-tier clubs in the Premier League and across Europe as validation of the club’s continued appeal for both the short and long term.

Director of Football Hugo Viana commented, “It is clear Marc has been one of the best defenders in English football for quite some time now, so we are absolutely delighted to bring him to Manchester City. Marc is entering the prime years of his career, and I am sure every City fan is excited to see how good he can be in a sky blue shirt.”
