Matarazzo s Strategic Changes Boost Player Involvement at Real SociedadMatarazzo s Strategic Changes Boost Player Involvement at Real Sociedad

Since Pellegrino Matarazzo’s appointment as head coach of Real Sociedad, he has predominantly entrusted the same players that were utilized by his predecessor, Sergio Francisco. This continuity is largely due to injuries and inconsistent performances from some players who were previously sidelined, leaving little room for alteration. Nevertheless, Matarazzo has successfully revitalized two players who were previously underutilized: Beñat Turrientes and Álvaro Odriozola.

Turrientes, in particular, has benefited from Matarazzo’s policy. He was thrust into the starting lineup for the first match of Matarazzo’s tenure due to Gorrotxategi’s suspension and has since started in all three league matches under the new coach, totaling 195 minutes on the pitch. This contrasts sharply with his previous total of only 279 minutes across the prior 17 matches.

Odriozola’s situation has also seen improvement. Previously, he had limited playing time under Sergio Francisco, appearing only during a match against Barcelona when circumstances forced his inclusion. However, he has since made notable contributions, including 32 minutes off the bench this past Sunday, adding to his earlier 46 minutes of play against Osasuna.

Initially, Odriozola’s prospects seemed bleak, especially after losing his number 2 jersey in the summer transfer window. Yet, he has now participated in two of Matarazzo’s four matches, compared to just three of the 20 matches under Sergio Francisco and Jon Ansotegi. This resurgence has led some fans, who previously advocated for his departure, to reevaluate his potential value to the team.

Similarly, Turrientes faced uncertainty regarding his future, contemplating a potential loan in the upcoming winter transfer window due to his limited role. However, his increased involvement and impressive performances under Matarazzo have transformed his outlook, motivating him to pursue his dream of succeeding at Real Sociedad.
