Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson was understandably disappointed following Jannik Vestergaard’s late equalizer, which secured a 1-1 draw for Leicester City in a match characterized by difficult weather conditions. Despite the outcome, Parkinson was able to identify some positives from his team’s resilient performance.

The Dragons dominated much of the match on a wet and windy night in North Wales, taking the lead with a strike from Lewis O’Brien in the 63rd minute. They held Leicester at bay for most of the second half, with the Foxes failing to register a single shot on goal until a late free kick led to the equalizer, where Vestergaard capitalized on a flick from Caleb Okoli following a chipped ball from Jordan Ayew.

Wrexham, who had experienced a disappointing 2-1 home defeat against Norwich just days earlier, demonstrated significant improvement, yet they missed the opportunity to draw level on points with sixth-placed Preston.

Parkinson remarked, “As time passes, I will likely focus more on the positives, but conceding so late from a moment that felt insignificant is certainly painful. If we had managed to clear the ball in that situation, we would have secured the victory. Their reaction was quicker, and it felt almost like a slow-motion moment.”

The result left Wrexham in ninth place instead of moving up the table alongside Preston, who suffered a 3-0 defeat to Hull City. Meanwhile, Leicester, under manager Marti Cifuentes, struggled for much of the match but managed to seize the opportunity to earn a point after Wrexham failed to secure a decisive second goal.

Cifuentes acknowledged the challenges his team faced with the conditions, stating, “The second half was not our best performance. When we fell behind, it significantly affected our emotions, leading to frustration in various situations. However, I commend the players for fighting until the end to earn a point. We always aim for three points, and while one is better than none, it is not what we were hoping for.”

Regarding his team’s struggle to create chances, he added, “We must perform much better. In the final moments after we scored, we showed more aggression in our pursuit of a second goal.”

Wrexham will look to bounce back when they face Queens Park Rangers away on Saturday.
