Dramatic AFCON Final Senegal Triumphs Amid ControversyDramatic AFCON Final Senegal Triumphs Amid Controversy

The AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco delivered an unforgettable spectacle at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, characterized by a series of dramatic incidents.

Tensions escalated when Senegal’s players left the pitch after referee Jean Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a contentious penalty in the 98th minute. This decision came on the heels of Senegal having a goal disallowed, causing head coach Pape Thiaw to express his frustration vehemently. Notably, former Liverpool star Sadio Mane remained on the field, urging his teammates to return, which they did after approximately 17 minutes of delay.

Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty for Morocco; however, his Panenka attempt was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, leading to Ndala signaling for full-time shortly thereafter. Pape Gueye ultimately secured the victory for Senegal with a goal in extra time, allowing the team to lift the coveted trophy. The post-match atmosphere remained charged, as both Thiaw and Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, faced pointed questions from journalists during their respective press conferences.

Former footballer Jamie Carragher has faced criticism in the past for his remarks regarding the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), suggesting that it should not be classified as a ‘major tournament.’ This discussion arose while contemplating the legacy of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.

In February of last year, Carragher stated: “The problem is the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such, or maybe got a great chance of winning. I think it’s either the Champions League or the major tournament. Normally, the player who excels in that.”

Following a backlash on social media, Carragher sought to clarify his comments, stating: “I’ve got very strong opinions on the game, I love debate and that will never change. But I never want to be described as ignorant or disrespectful. I was trying to explain the merits of Mo Salah winning the Ballon d’Or and feel that not just AFCON, but other regional tournaments, don’t resonate with those who vote for the Ballon d’Or.”

During a recent discussion on CBS Sports regarding the 2025 AFCON final, Carragher suggested that bringing in top European referees might enhance officiating in the tournament. Henry quickly countered, emphasizing the importance of giving African referees the opportunity to officiate in their own tournament. He acknowledged the need for development in officiating standards, which have been marred by increasing mistakes, thus impacting the tournament’s reputation.

Carragher’s immediate focus now shifts to Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League match against Marseille. A victory in France would bolster their standing in the league. Manager Jürgen Klopp hinted that Salah, who excelled at AFCON by scoring four goals as Egypt secured third place, may start this fixture.

Currently, Liverpool sits in 11th place following recent matches that saw victories for teams like Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Tottenham. However, a win against Marseille could elevate them to fourth place, while the Ligue 1 team has recorded three wins and three losses in their six matches so far, recently triumphing against Newcastle United and Union Saint-Gilloise.
